Surgery update

Earlier this year, it was time for us to revisit Jack's airway and get a plan for the next steps.  We decided to take him to the aero digestive center at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. After four months of waiting for his appointment, in May, we headed out on our road trip!

Road trip crew. A HUGE thank you to Grandpa for all the driving he did and helping with the boys!

We made it!

So thankful for family we were able to stay with during Jack's appointment days and the wonderful hosts they were!

After four days of tests and procedures, it was recommended that Jack have a second major airway reconstruction surgery. While we were not surprised at this recommendation, we were hoping last summer's surgery was the only major one he would need in the process of getting his trach out.

Jack is currently scheduled for laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR) surgery Monday, August 8 in Cincinnati.  Jack has a severe Grade 3 subglottic stenosis meaning that his airway is almost completely occluded above where the trach is and that he can hardly breathe through his nose or mouth.  He will be having a two-staged repair which means that the doctor will take rib cartilage as a graft to expand the airway in the front and back so the scarring is no longer blocking above the trach.  A stent will also be placed to hold the newly repaired airway open while healing. Jack will most likely be in the pediatric intensive care unit for 4-7 days and then we will return about seven weeks later to have the stent removed.  After the stent is removed, there will be some minor procedures to see how the airway is healing.  This whole time, Jack will continue to have his trach.  Jack also has some scarring on the back of his voice box.  The hope there is that Jack will have a "serviceable" voice.

We would love it if you would be praying for our family:

-that the surgery goes well, that the graft takes, that there wouldn't be any infections, and that Jack's voice would be fully restored.
-for Eli as he will be staying at home with family for this surgery.  And for us being away from him.
-for safe travels; we will be flying this time which we have not done before with Jack and all his medical equipment.
