Surgery updates

Monday, August 8-
Just talked to the doctors. Surgery, in general, went as planned! Thank you, Lord!! We are waiting for him to wake up and to go back to see him.  He will be in the hospital for 5-7 days as he recovers.  He will continue to have his trach as this is a two stage surgery. He now has a stent in place in his airway while the airway heals around it. The plan is to come back in seven weeks to get the stent removed and see how the airway looks/has healed. Thank you again for praying and encouraging our family throughout all of this!

Tuesday morning-
Jack had a fairly peaceful night. In the recovery room last night, he was in some respiratory distress. The doctor did a scope and saw some floppiness in his airway below where the trach was, so to prevent that from happening they had to put in a bigger and longer trach tube. After that change was made, all was well. He has only briefly woke up a couple of times and otherwise has been sleeping pretty comfortably.

Tuesday night-
Jack had a great day today! He has been on room air (no supplemental oxygen) since this morning. They restarted his feeds at a slower rate and he has done well with that too.  He also had a few awake periods today and enjoyed watching Daniel Tiger and Super Why. 😀

Wednesday-
This morning Jack got the drain out of his chest where they took some rib cartilage for grafts in his airway. The plan is for him to get his neck drain out tomorrow and also see if he tolerates his typical length trach. If all continues to go well, they are talking discharge on Friday! Thanking God for Jack's smooth recovery so far!

Thursday-
They changed his trach this morning and he has been doing well with his normal size, which is great! Praise the Lord! This means his airway is not floppy below where the trach is like it was immediately after surgery. He also got the drain out of his neck. They tried changing pain medicine a bit and he seems to be in a little more pain today with an elevated heart rate, so praying his pain can stay managed. Please also pray that he can tolerate his normal feeding schedule. He has been throwing up a lot, which can be due to a few different things, but hoping he can get better rest today!

Thursday night-
Jack has improved in all ways this afternoon/evening, PTL! He is still scheduled to be discharged tomorrow.
